Max Ulrich (Uli) Schoop (1903 - 1990) was a German born sculptor, painter, printmaker, who lived and worked in Paris (1928-1940) then Zurich, Switzerland, where he was a professor of art at the University of Zurich from 1953-1973. This wonderful small bust is signed but undated, but based on other works I believe likely dates to the 1940s. Finely sculpted and beautiful from every view, I find her quite a thoughtful, curious and gentle seeming presence!
(Schoop's mother, who I must say I think this bust resembles, was Hedi Schoop, a fascinating woman, also an artist as well as a dancer and cabaret performer, who went on to found a ceramic factory in California which produced her designs under the auspices of "Hedi Schoop Art Creations.")
