I’ve got a great lot of love for this drawing, proudly signed by a Mary E. Baldwin in 1850, perhaps most of all for the tiny chair, and maybe a little table too, just waiting for this figure’s arrival at the top of the hill! An unexpected detail, but exactly the right thing to give this drawing a narrative arc, and to place all of our empathy with this hatted figure, cane in one hand and other in his pocket, as he slowly makes his way. Love.
Framed: 11 3/8” x 14 1/2”. Sight: 11 1/2” x 8 1/2”. Some age toning to the paper but overall good condition. Sold in the period frame I found it in, which shows a small loss at lower right but I’d leave just as is, and is wired on the back for hanging.
