I've always got an eye out for great puppets, but rarely come across one I like as much as this guy, I'm guessing from a Punch and Judy set, early 20th century or so. What a beauty of a face, with this prominent nose, open mouth, and huge eyes, looking a mix of surprised and anxious, as if about to have to fend off something or someone! His carved wooden head is attached to a wooden post, which is covered by his hand-sewn outfit, terminating in fabulous tall black boots. He's seen a lot of action for sure--with paint loss, a crack running down the front of his face, a missing button on his coat, and general soiling, but to my eye these just add character, which he has in abundance. He's very sturdy (perhaps indestructible), sound and stable, with the seams on his clothes all well in tact and lots more performances left in him. Really a charmer I think.
