Surely this old copper leg was once attached to a figure, and it must have been a quite a large one, I believe likely a weathervane. As found now, it feels rather like a large ex voto, an offering delivered in hopes of the healing of a broken one. (And, open at the top, it might be placed on the mantle in hopes of being filled with a few treats at Christmas, too!) Mostly, i just think it is a very beautiful object, with a very beautiful, very painterly sort of verdigris patina (softer and more nuanced/variegated than my photos capture.) It's of the sort that I'd arrange among my very favorite, oldest things--feels like it would be happy next to an ancient Roman glass vessel, say, or some ancient pottery fragments!
8" t x 3 3/8" wide at foot; 2 1/8" across at opening, 1 1/8" d. Open at the heel and at the top of the leg. More beautiful in hand. Stable and sound and not at all fragile. It will stand in its own turned upside down, otherwise needs to be leaned or just laid flat, which suits it--and it's a nice thing to pick up and look and set down somewhere else!
