Holey Christ! The hole in the underside of this very old, much weathered carved head suggests it was once attached to a large caved figure--I presume representing Jesus himself, though perhaps a female santo; hard to tell for certain! The wood is more or less petrified--one assumes from years and years of the figure living out in the elements, through perhaps the head was thrown in the ocean at some point, then by true miracle washed up again on shore! I do believe the former, and believe likely European in origin, with plenty of worm holes in the wood. I find it all quite beautiful, and it definitely feels filled with the spirit to me!
8 1/2" t x approx 5 1/2" wide and deep. Stable and sound, rich coloration to the wood, light in weight. Stands squarely and proudly on its own.
