I really really love this sign, from the tiny details to the overall effect. First, the total lack of precision about it (note, among other things, the penciled "G" showing through the "T" in painting) makes it seem anything but an effective advertisement for a "job painter"--I think I would quite like the person who made it, but don't think I'd hire them to paint my trim! And then these decorative periods (red ringed in gold paint) after Underhill and Job and Painting--to match the periods after the initials L.F. but making no real sense otherwise! And just these great wonderful wonky large letter to begin each word, and the gold on cream paint just generally, and this sweet but rather random seeming anchor at bottom right. The more time I spend looking at this one, the more deeply empathetic and completely charming I find it.
28 1/8" x 13 1/2" x 7/8" on solid wood panel, cut a bit unevenly along the right edge which I think just makes it better. Good, super solid condition with surface wear and aging as evident including one black stain above the anchor, all to the good I think. 1920s-40s I would guess. My photos are not very good--way too big to fit in my usual photo set up!
