A mans manners commonly shapes his fortune. / Some must die, that others may live said the gravedigger. / Kingdoms and crowns must in the dust be laid. / Many are made saints on earth that never heaven reach./ Never study to please others whereby you ruin yourself. / Wine is a turn-coat, first a friend, then an enemy. / The city care not what the country thinks. / This is the 16th day of March, AD 1828. Pretty apt some 200 years later, I'd say! And a beautiful, and notably early, example of fine penmanship. With the most wonderful lettering of GEORGE SMITH in black and red ink on the reverse side--don't miss the details--signed "His Coppys Daniel Domer" signed proudly just below.
7 3/4" x 5 5/8", red and black ink on wove. A little bleed through as evident, but more pronounced in photos than in hand--altogether easy to read, with black ink very strong, and lettering just beautiful.
