What a miraculous creature is the narwhal (or narwhale, or Unicorn of the Sea!), possessing a sense of the mythological, but real, found in the Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada, and Russia. The spiraled tusk is actually an elongated tooth, which, almost exclusively in males, can can grow up to 10 feet long. It is most commonly a left tooth, but occasionally a right tusk develops too, giving some narwhal two tusks!
I can't help but to think of this Inuit carved soapstone Narwahl as a good luck talisman- like a unicorn, indeed. I also love its simultaneous gracefulness and awkwardness--a body built for gliding through the water, but then how to manage this giant encumbrance when on shore? Ah, such is life! A great piece to live with I think, embodying paradox and speaking to the negotiation our own particular challenges!
