I have a suspicion that this wonderful abstracted animal is a piece by Andy Miki (1918-1982), widely acclaimed carver from Arviat, NU renowned for his abstract, simplified animal sculptures--a couple examples of which I've included at end of photos--which are quite distinct from most other Inuit carvings. I can find no examples of his syllabic signature to compare this one to, but everything about it suggests his work to me--in which case I am selling it as quite a bargain price. I just fell in love with the essential, pared down form of it, and especially the head--suggestive of many animals at once but none in literal form. Really a wonderful piece, which is also quite a satisfying thing to wrap ones hand around.
Just shy of 5" long, 2 3/4" tall, 1 3/4" wide. There is a darker area on the back, perhaps from an old sticker, but which has permanently darkened the stone. Otherwise, great condition. Signed in syllabics with disk number on the underside.
