This Indonesian fan I believe dates to the very early 20th century, and, like traditional Javanese shadow theatre puppets, is made of finely pierced and painted hide parchment, most likely buffalo skin. At the center is a Wayang Kulit shadow puppet figure rendered in gold with with black details. The handle is carved black horn, extending up along the edges and attached by thread wound through pierced holes. Quite a wonderful thing, which indeed casts a terrific shadow when illuminated in a darkened room.
Very good antique condition, with some paint loss particularly on one side, a few dark spots, and a few light scrapes on the handle/. 12 1/4" tall x 7 3/4" wide x 1/4" thick.
