The condition here is not perfect--there is a tear to the paper coming down from the top edge mid right, and it shows a fair bit of overall toning--but I really love it, very moody and appearing very much a portrait of a specific place. And it almost seems as if the paper were velvet, there is such a softness about it all. Such drama to those smoky clouds, framing the scene like parting curtains, and then what appears to be another trail of smoke rising from the chimney of the house. Look closely and there is this beautifully fine architecture of white/silver lines detailing the front porch of the house, fence in front of it, branches of the tree to the left, and panes of the windows--a precision there that is contrasted by the much looser handling of the charcoal. Such a terrific barn and fence back there too, really all very wonderful.
13 1/4" x 10 3/4" framed, behind glass, as found--period and perhaps original to it, with relatively newly papered back. Tear and toning as evident, and general wear to the surface of the frame, especially at top corners. Feels very much all of a piece though and for me the overall effect is just right.
