Hopi "Koroctu" Katchina Drawing, 1903 Bureau of American Ethnology Bookplate

Regular price $24.00

This bookplate came from the 1903 Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution Annual Report (published in book format) featuring original drawings of Hopi Kachina “drawn by native artists.” These were primarily done by a 30 year old Hopi man named Kutcahanauu, or White Bear, who was hired by American anthropologist Jesse Walker Fewkles to visually record the hundreds of different kachinas revered by the tribe. I wish I had every plate in the book as I think the drawings are extraordinary, but I just found this and one other, listed separately, which I purchased from a seller of rare books in Portland, Maine.

Page size: 11” x 7 1/4”. Light toning to upper right corner, some staining along the right margin, and a couple of very small tears (top right corner and bottom left edge) repaired (at some point in the past) with tape on reverse. A mat over top would hide them all. Blank reverse. There is a little sheen to the nice weight paper.
