Harry Floreth Drew this Picture with Pencil, 1905--After Sir Edwin Landseer's "Saved" Girl with St. Bernard

Regular price $95.00

There are a lot of folk art paintings and drawings out there that were inspired by Edwin Landseer's 1856 painting "Saved," which circulated very widely in reproduction--no great surprise, as hard to beat a story of a child rescued by a loyal and loving dog. This drawing, done by a young Harry Floreth in 1905, is quite faithful to the composition of the original, but even better I think in the mix of worry and exhaustion and sort of existential angst it captures on the face of this wonderful Newfoundland. And the manner in which Harry rendered the waves of the choppy ocean is pretty terrific too.

11 1/8" x 7 5/16" in original black painted wood frame, under glass, as found. Good antique condition with some paint loss to the surface of the frame, all of a piece with it.
