I have looked and looked but found no other matador doll out there as wonderful as this one. I'd guess it dates to the early 20th century if not a little earlier, and is just fantastically made, with raw linen face and body, hand-embroidered face, and carefully tailored costume of perfectly fitted purple linen bolero jacket and pants, with fantastic beaded details and needlework; just look at those epaulets! While I am not a doll collector, the fineness of the craftsmanship and attention to detail on this piece embodies all of the things that would drive me to become one!
This doll shows its age; the linen is worn thin in places and one of the feet has become partially undone, but I love it all the more for the wear and it is quite stable and sound (and stands up straight if leaned against something.) Really a special thing! 8 5/8" tall x 2 3/4" wide x 1 3/8" deep.
