I don't know a thing about the origins of this carved sculpture (which I don't think photos quite do justice), but I think it is pretty terrific. My guess is that it is American, and her face and fantastic mane give it a late 60s/early 70s feel to me, but I am really not sure. I love the way her hair wraps around all three sides of the sculpture, echoed by the deeply carved lines of the sheet draped over and around her. But perhaps what I love most about it is her raised, clenched fist, which I'm taking as a assertion of power and self possession!
Unsigned. I would guess the wood is ebony, and indeed the sculpture is quite heavy for its size. There is some irregularity to the wood, with a lighter area on and around her front foot. Very good condition, no dings or cracks that I can see. 8 5/8" long x 3 5/8" wide x 2 1/8" deep. This piece could be displayed flat or a hook could be attached to the backside for hanging.
