I've long been admiring both the forms and the glorious color on early croquet posts, so was delighted to finally find this pair in Maine a few days ago. Great original paint, terrific palette, beautiful turned forms looking like stacks of spools. The only thing missing is a base for display (one sometime sees stands composed of a couple of old croquet balls), but certainly there are also sorts of ways in which to show these. I look as readymade painterly sculptures, or sculptural paintings, and might be most inclined to hang them on the wall just resting on a few nails.
Late 19th century. Each measures 22 1/4" t x 1 3/4" in diameter. Some wear and paint loss as evident, but overall they've held on to their color beautifully. Certainly these saw more than a games, and the points at the ends are a bit worn down from use.
