Glen Rock Hose & Ladder Company, PA, Charming Relief Carved Folk Art Plaque

Regular price $150.00

The Glen Rock Hose and Ladder company, founded in 1901 as Glen Rock, PA's  all volunteer fire company, remains active today as the community's dedicated fire department. Lots about it and its history here. I found this wonderful relief carved plaque none too far from Glen Rock, and believe it was carved not too long into that history, c. 1920s-30s. Just as good as can be, with these very naive but wonderfully executed renderings of coat and hat and boots and what looks to me like a hybrid of a sword and a hose! Then fraternal compass and square inscribed in a shield on the left side, with house and Bible (?) inside. Fabulous hand-carved lettering too, painted gold, spelling out the name of the company about and initials below: "F.P.A".(Fire Protection Association, I believe), and G.R.H.L.C. A very charming thing.

14 1/6" x 10 1/16". Relieve carved solid wood plaque with gold paint and stains. Very good condition, all the more charming in hand. With old eye hook center top for hanging.
