If you perceive this drawing as if our girl is looking straight ahead rather than down with lids closed, it becomes a bit of an eerie one, as if she were possessed by otherworldly forces! But even if one reads her eyes as closed, it’s still got a wonderful sort of strangeness, with her hat looking as if might be concealing a rising loaf of bread! I especially love the very focused treatment of her hair. Graphite and blue crayon, dated Sept 15,1885 at lower right.
9 3/8” x 7 1/8”. There are a few tears to the paper coming in from the edges, which I stabilized with archival tape on the reverse side. Otherwise folds to lower corners and general wear.
