A super moody and rather gothic feeling 19th c. ink drawing on paper, with tilted cross atop this lookout platform seeming to me either to forbode a coming disaster or to mourn one having recently occurred. I love the row of tiny figures in their various hats arranged under the waving flag, and how the lighthouse on peninsula in the distance partially blocks a view of a tall ship behind. Picturesque seascapes are lovely, but this drawing, to me at least, captures more of the real drama of Victorian era life lived by the sea.
Ink on thin, almost tissue weight, cream wove. Good overall condition, drawing clean and bold, with uneven edges to the paper as evident.
