Finely Woven and Patterned Northwest Coast Native Basket, Presumed Antique Klamath-Modoc

Regular price $175.00

Just my sort of basket, found in Maine but Northwest Coast Native--similar in manner to the Makah or Nootka beargrass and cedar bark baskets I love so much and find more often, but this I believe Klamath, a tribal culture comprising Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin-Paiute people of the Klamath Basin region of southern Oregon and Northern California. This is a small one, but notable for the fineness and boldness of the patterning, including sun at the center of the underside, which is quite unusual among the many examples I have studied. Woven primarily of tule (hardstem bulrush) believe, and I believe dating to the very early 20th century.

5 1/4" d x 2 1/2" t and in excellent condition.
