I've got a special weakness for renderings of children with their beloved pets, and it took me all of two seconds to purchase this one from a seller in England when I saw it. Quite finely done, at first glance one might almost think it a print, but it's a watercolor indeed, unsigned but dating to the mid 19th century I know. The treatment of the dog I think is especially terrific, with its shaggy hair given intensive attention, but it's that white paw resting on the leg of the boy, and the boy's hand resting on the dog's neck in return (much more important than his book!) that really makes it a gem.
7 1/4" x 4 5/8" watercolor on watermarked laid paper. There are old glue stains on the reverse side which show through a bit, minor and I don't think detracting. Otherwise very good condition, no tears, very minor toning.
