Quite a fine small portrait of boy finely dressed for a hiking outing, hat in one hand (with its feather commanding the only use of watercolor) and walking stick in the other. In addition to its delicacy, for me it is the boy's slightly upward and sideward gaze that really makes the drawing, lending just a bit of mischievousness to his very pretty face. Very lovely. With handwritten information on reverse; it is a bit hard to read, in German I believe, which I have not worked hard to decipher. If I am correct it describes the subject--Carl Eduard Krauss--as born in 1846, so I would think the portrait was done in the mid 1850s, which seems right to me.
Professionally framed, as found: 10 1/2" x 9". Sight: 5 3/4" x 4 1/2". Very good condition.
