I really love this carved box--and of course living in Ipswich, MA I am especially disposed toward clams! Feels one part treen and one part tramp, with beautifully carved form and viscerally satisfying linear then cross-hatched incising across the entire exterior but for the flat bottom. The interior (reminding me of the shape of coco de mer) led me in a round about way to discover one similar example out there, that one (priced a bit higher than I am asking) identified as Japanese, carved of Tochi wood (Japanese Horse Chesnut), and purchased in Yokohama, Japan c. 1940. And that all seems about right, maybe carved a few decades earlier, I am not entirely certain, but whatever the case quite an excellent thing.
4 1/8" w x 4" d x 2 3/4" t. Good condition, sturdy and sound, nice patina, with general light surface wear as shown. There is one small loss to the surface of the hinge, visible from the rear, as shown--not affecting the integrity of the hinge, and one could dab a little stain there and it would disappear.
