Fantastic Tramp Art Large Box with Drawer

Sale price $145.00 Regular price $175.00

What a box! And what a lot of effort its maker put into making it! The decorative cut wood bits, which have been glued on everywhere, are stained four different shades to my count, and as far as I can tell there is only one bit on the whole piece that is lost- at the very center of the top. The top latch on the front opens to reveal two interior trays (and an underside of the lid that is as ornately decorated as the exterior!) Below that, also with a latch to hold it shut as desired, is a drawer that pulls out. So lots of room in this one for storing all sorts of things!

Based on other tramp art boxes in this sort of style that I've seen, I'd guess the box dates to the first quarter of the 20th century, though I am not entirely sure. One interior tray shows part of the name of a cigar box from which it was constructed - Garcia & Vega, I believe. And on the backside, there is a little triangular bit of wood at the center that I believe serves as a bumper to keep it from knocking against the wall. There are a couple of minor splits in the wood on the top/lid and one split in the top interior tray, but overall this piece is in great condition and really a marvelous piece!
