These two! My favorite Brimfield find for sure, and definitely one of my top finds ever--and how wonderful that they have remained a couple over all of these many years. With their flat backs it seems quite possible they once decorated something else, but I'm not certain; I do believe 19th century American, and I think most likely New England or Pennsylvania.I find their faces just marvelous--a bit stoic but whimsical too, made more so the latter as they sit on green painted necks with wing-like shoulders (or fluttering little arms) with furls holding white hearts below. Gorgeously aged painted surfaces with alligatoring here and there and a bunch of worm holes freckling him. Just wonderful.
Him: 6 3/14” x 3 5/8” x 2 1/8”. Her: 6 7/8” x 3 1/4” x 2 1/8”. Both sound and stable, and both with small hanging loops attached to the back top of their heads.
