Wow wow wow. I found this one in New Hampshire near the Vermont border, spotted through the window of an antiques shop a few weeks ago that is only open Saturdays, so I went back yesterday to grab it, and gently heft it to my car! I've since done just a tiny bit of touch up with a black Sharpie--not to repair real damage, but just to blend a few tiny spots where a little minor bumping had taken off the finish. It is quite a stunning thing to behold--voluminously, boldly sculptural and quite a feat of labor and craft (and I must say I think the underside may be the best of all!)
There is one small area of loss on the back along the edge where one hinge would attach the lid to the body; I am guessing product of the weight of the lid being a bit too much for the tiny hinge to take. The hinges remain attached, but not to the lid, which itself sits snugly flush on the box (not just resting, but fitting into position) so I think no real issue. Otherwise, one tiny loss to the top layer of one corner, which looks perhaps to have occurred during its making as it is stained over. Overall, really excellent condition and just breathtaking. The original pink interior lining (under the lid too), punctuated with brass upholstery tacks, is firmly in tact, a bit dirty but amazing looking in and of itself. Late 19th century or so I believe and an example of tramp art at its most elaborate. Photos cannot convey the magnitude of its presence!
