Falls of the Pine Run, Enthusiastically Observed 1887 Pen Ink Drawing with Charming Narrative on Reverse

Regular price $115.00

I purchased this drawing in Nashville from a favorite Pennsylvania based dealer and think it's just fantastic--but so much better in hand, because it is really all about the dense--and really quite intense--swirl of mark-making here, executed in colored inks with a finely nibbed ink pen. Details convey it best, adding up to a drawing that feels like a world to step in to. And so no real surprise that written on the reverse side of the paper should be the maker's first hand account of  experiencing "The Falls of the Pine Run" in the Lehigh Valley of PA..."Deep in the mountains, far from the habitation of man, overshaded by a dense forest, and the ground covered with undergrowth that it almost shuts out the light of day, you would like to live forever and listen to the murmurings of the waters as they dash down the little cataracts...in such a place life would glide on like a dream or continuation of paradise." Wonderfully expressed, and perfectly captured, I'd say!

5 7/8 x 7 1/2 and in good antique condition, with toning to the lined paper evident around the edges, to my eye just adding to its atmosphere. Singed Albert Ohle, and dated Aug. 17, 1887.
