I’ve gotten really into old landscapes that were ethereal to begin with and which age has made all the more so. This one veers toward complete abstraction—just a very soft sky of pink giving way to light blue, with the same again for the water below. And then soft greens on the horizon and framing the river view, with lots of craquelure at either side in the foreground, which further blurs the distinction between water and land. Super atmospheric, and wonderfully calming, with brushstrokes especially evident in the pink of the sky.
Just shy of 10 1/2” x 8 1/2”, oil on artist board. The board has hardened over time, with a just a bit of an even bow to it—no matter, and not evident from the front, but just enhancing its sense of objecthood a bit. Uncleaned. First two images were shot in slightly different lighting conditions.
