Not quite exactly my usual thing, but when I happened upon this painting close to home, I was immediately struck by its fineness and layers upon layers of glorious color and pattern and drama and detail, and the more time I spend with it, the more smitten I become. I've also got a weakness for any painting that reminds me of the frescoes I fell in love while living Florence, with at least one character casting a side eye directly out at the viewer, as one of the gold robed figures at right is doing. I'd describe this as a sort of Renaissance revival/ neoclassical history painting, with the coronation scene depicted I believe likely 15th-16th century, complete with armor under the robe of new king and a mace in the hand of the helmeted man at near right. The great delights lie is the details, so it's best to look at those! Perhaps the perfect painting for one who wants to rule the world (or thinks they already do!)
Signed A. Moreaux, a French painter I have not turned up much about, and dated 1854 at lower left. 18" x 14 7/8” and in very good condition, oil on canvas, newly restored with a new canvas lining, done by a friend of mine who is a professional restorer. Light all over craquelure to the paint, all to the good in my opinion. The color is glorious. It is my photo not the painting that is a little crooked!
