One sees great old hat forms around from time to time, but it's these head shaped ones carved from one piece of wood I'm interested in, the most singular in their patinas acquired through use the better. I love the way the grain of the wood enhances the form the of the head and outlines the face, especially, and on this one how much wear there is the front of the face itself, almost as if it had been willfully marred. Most of all I love the patch of brown paper and staples on the back of the head, with pin pricks all over and all around it just making it better, and making it seem rather as if having endured a surgical procedure. And it almost looks like letter and symbols carved into the sides, too. Second half 19th c. I believe, surely this head gave rise to some marvelous hats!
