Elastic Ariel and Monsieur Mercury, c.1840s Hand-colored Engraving

Regular price $25.00

A small thing, which was clearly extracted from a 19th century scrapbook, but which I find just wonderful. I believe the questions along the bottom are riddles, and would guess the answers begin with the letters "T" and "U," printed at upper right--which would also imply that there was once a whole alphabet's worth. Terrific block printed color, and I sure love their balletic postures and starry wands! An image search on this one turns up nothing, so I'm not sure the source, but would guess 1830s-40s or so.

Print area: 4" x 3 1/4", mounted to backing paper as found. Good condition, black and color bold and paper not brittle.
