Edwin Kosarek 1950 Erongaricuaro Drawing - Portrait as Map of Michoacan

Regular price $35.00

I think his drawings were so good, lyrical and true feeling, and consistently inventive and surprising--and this one combines two of my favorite things one: a portrait and a map!  A point near the top of the head of this woman in profile is labeled Erongarícuaro (which means "Place of waiting" in the Purepecha language), a town in the Mexican state of Michoacan, and then down the train track like line to her wrist is the famous colonial town of Pátzcuaro. (I believe it would then be Lake Pátzcuaro delineated more or less by the lines drawn in front of her chest.) Like making constellations out of stars, of course maps should be anthropomorphized, and what a charming example this one is.

Blue ink on tan paper: 10" x 7". Mounted to white paper with punch holes down the left: 8 1/2" x 11", which is signed and dated. Very good condition.
