I've got this theorem painting sitting near where I take photographs, and every time I pass it I am newly struck but how lovely it is, both brighter and more lush feeling than I remember. (As usual, much better in hand.) Mid 1800s I believe and likely New England, where theorem painting, made using many hand-cut and layered stencils, was taught to young women of the upper classes in "finishing" schools. This one, as was traditionally the case, painted on velvet, which makes all of those flowers feel very voluptuous! Seems there must have once been a mat that overlaid this, leaving a bit of a toned ring around it, but I think much nicer it be liberated. And the blue of that sprig of bluebells bottom right is just electric!
18 1/2" x 16 1/4" framed. Under glass, period frame with original wood back. Painting in overall very good condition, color strong and lush, with toning ring as noted above. General wear to frame, with a bit of looseness at the corners, which can be readily pushed or gently knocked back together if needed.
