I do have a weakness for boxes, but even more so a weakness for glorious paint, and no way could I look at the painted decoration on this box and not need to have it near me, for a little while or forever! How joyful those stripes and curlicues like trains of smoke running up the sides against that gorgeous bittersweet ground, and then these diamond shaped fields of white dots on the slide lid, like abstracted clouds, and also feeling kin to early hand-printed wall paper. Very satisfying boxy form too, with applied piece at one end of the slide lid that makes for easy opening and closes up squarely. Earlyish 19th century and pine I believe, with square head nails visible on the underside and under the paint on the sides.
4 9/16" x 2 7/16" x 1 7/8" t. Very good condition, sturdy and sound, lid slides in and out smoothly and closes tight. Color all the brighter and richer in hand, really wonderful.
