You know I love a photograph of a painting, especially a portrait--a likeness rendered in one form/media translated into another, carrying the subject forward, across time. And to my eye this one is pure perfection. Ultra moody, perfect framing of the frame, with a perfect contrast between the clarity of detail on the frame and the painterliness of the portrait. And the ground, which looks likely like velvet, also has a bit of the feeling of skin. I'd be very glad to keep this one for myself, which feels like a distillation of many things at once.
6 1/2" x 4 1/2", good condition, stamped D Grant on reverse. The painted portrait itself looks French to me but I don't know for sure.
