This is one of a pair of paintings I found together yesterday in Maine, clearly done by the same person and I think equally terrific. (The other is a little smaller.) As opposed to the wolf aggressively chasing a pair of deer in the other painting, here this shaggy dog with what I assume is a pheasant in its sights seems more a lot more friendly than ferocious! The bright sky opening behind him gives this one the feel, to me, of a brisk, invigorating early morning outing. Nice imposto, nice old panel, very charming.
10 7/16" x 5 13/16" and in very good condition. Just a bit of cracking to the wood at bottom right. Earlyish 20th century I believe.
