I found this curious old carved figure in New Hampshire this week--perhaps once part of a whirligig? I'm really not sure, but I think he's wonderful, green face and all. And I had just read (courtesy of Joey Lin, Anonymous Works) about Elizabeth Eaton of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, who has worn all green every day for some 25 years because she believe it the most positive color and "makes me feel happy"--so I took this guy as a harbinger of happiness too, even if he looks a bit trepidatious about it! It appears to me that the paint is all original, with black for his (relief carved) tie and trousers and trim on his jacket, green everywhere else. His arms, attached by one wire that runs through his body, can swing together or move independently, and he's attached to his custom steel base by one post that extends into one leg; the other leg is untethered. Carved of what I believe is pine, earlyish 20th century, with wear just where it should be, including to the end of his sweet little nose!
9 1/2" T X 3 3/8" w at shoulders, 3" w at base; base 2 1/2" d. Good condition, just losses to the ends of his arms. Sturdy and sound, terrific wear, great presence.
