This is an early pen and ink penmanship exercise signed Sally Spague and dated 1808. In addition to the fabulous eagle at top, and the header "Confine Your Passions" employing the "long s", what really sold me was the section about riches. "Riches in the hand of a beneficent man are a blessing to the public [.] such a one is a steward to providence and the whole means of correcting the inequalities of fortune [,] of relieving the miserable and spreading happiness to all that are within the reach of his acquaintance." i.e. Share the wealth!
9 3/4" x 7 7/8" . Very good condition, ink on wove, general light toning, paper sturdy weight and not at all fragile. Ink not super bold but completely clear and readable throughout--better in hand. An early example.
