A complete set of twenty Hill's Spelling Blocks, c. 1870s I believe--as found in wood framed box bottom, which fits them just right. Two sides of each block feature black letters against red with words below; two sides with red letters against white; one side with images (black on white litho); and one side red numbers on white, running 0-9 then 1-10 in roman numerals. Pretty hard to find complete sets of these and they tend to be fairly preciously priced when one does. I find them really beautiful, and also love the challenge of searching all the sides for the letters one wants to use--as designed, there are multiples of some letters and just one of others, forcing one to be resourceful! As with color cubes, I believe everyone, young and old, needs at least one set of these.
9 3/8" x 11 1/2" box. Each block 2 1/8" square. Good antique condition with general wear consistent with age and handling--just as there should be.
