Charming Small 1840s Cloth Covered Scrapbook/Ledger

Regular price $35.00

A very sweet little thing, it appears this notebook was first used for recording expenses, then repurposed (possibly recovered at that point in this charming woven plaid fabric with separate strip covering the spine) as a scrapbook for assorted clippings. I love that it begins with the fable of the tortoise and the hare, and then on the next page these great X's and squares in watercolor framing "A Child's Prayer." The remaining clippings are quite eclectic, as is often the case with these sorts of scrapbooks, including poems about presidents and not wasting food, jokes about the origin of 'joseys' and California joining the Union, advice for young about identifying respectful men, etc etc.

6 7/16" x 4 1/16". 14 pages (filled front and back) in total, with the first 4 (8 sides) filled with clippings, and the remaining pages just the old ledger pages filled with accounting. On one page handwritten is the year 1840.  Overall very good, clean condition, tightly bound.
