I have no idea the story behind this, but I think it's fabulous--with this early locomotive coal train hand-drawn over and over on old plywood panel in what appears to have been a black marker. I've tried to figure out what the partial text on the bottom might refer to--looks like the existing letters might read Hemfield, but that has lead me nowhere. I just love the manner of the drawing, with this little man in brimmed hat at the center of the train, just slightly different in each frame, and the repeating patterns of black lines and dots both in the drawing and as borders all around. (And some of those lines continuing across a cut to the surface of the wood, too.) What a lot of effort, which sure seems like the product of a certain obsessiveness! If you happen to know something more about this, I'd love to hear!
17 1/8" l x 6 1/8" t x 7/8" thick and in good condition, with a nice warm patina. One small area of some surface scuffing, and a little paint at upper left. I'd think maybe cut down from a larger piece, but none of the sides look more recently cut than any of the others. Wired on the back for hanging.
