I believe this early carving is meant to represent a Revolutionary War officer-- tricorne hat, blue long coat, gold sash, and yellow waist coat and breeches. Sadly, this wonderful fellow lost part of one arm and also the very corner tip of his hat along the way--but he's so good I'd just call them battle wounds! The original paint has endured and aged beautifully, and he is otherwise in great shape, still sturdily attached to his base and standing tall and very very charming.
