Striking Old Cut Metal Calf Weaner

Regular price $100.00

This I do believe is the most striking and graphically satisfying calf weaner I've ever seen--and there are some pretty excellent looking examples out there. Rather like bee boxes, calf weaners reflect a wide variety of solutions to a common problem: preventing calves from nursing while allowing them to graze, drink, and interact with their mothers. This one seems to me an especially elegant example, bearing a kinship with everything from medieval armor to cut and woven paper valentines. With the original leather strap still attached across the top with buckle at one end. Early 20th c. or so, I believe.
9 1/4" w x 5 11/16" t x 1" d. Very good condition, with loss to one end of the leather strap as evident.
