Early Staffordshire Franklin Maxims Child's Cup, Make Hay While the Sun Shines

Regular price $65.00

I'll never get over my affection for antique Staffordshire child's cups, which I love for their forms as well as for their transfer decoration, hand-colored in this case. But what sold me on this early (c.1820s-30s) and rare one--one of a number made featuring Franklin's Maxims--was the text reading "Make hay while the sun shines / An hour today is worth two tomorrow." A wise man was Franklin, and what a good bit of wisdom to impart to a child, and to remind oneself of too--then and now! This cup, including for the men and women standing around with hoes in their hands (and pink and yellow striped piles of hay) makes me purely happy.

2 9/16" tall x 2 11/16" in diameter; 3 11/16" across at handle. Fairly good overall condition (I like these showing age and wear), with plenty of crazing, scattered stains, some roughness around the lip, and imperfections to the original transfer, native to the cup. No cracks, significant chips or repairs that I can see.
