This struck me as a portrait of a state of being/metaphor for all that sucks, as much as a portrait of a specific boy. He looks pretty miserable but he also looks like kind of a jerk--surely resultant of being pretty miserable. With a certain absurdity and also a sense of lonely sadness to his streamer decorated hat. Party's over. This feels to me quite an apt portrait for our times.
