Belle York, Age 10-11, 1885-86 Sketchbook with Far-ranging Graphite Drawings, Elmira, NY

Regular price $125.00

It's the first drawing shown here that completely sold me on this sketchbook--a marvelous drawing I think amid a sketchbook that it a bit all over the place (some other good drawings too, including a young girl facing off with a spider, and a sweet rat, and some nice bunnies, and a pair of birds with a nest of baby beaks, and a great head of a fox, and a couple of kids making a tall tower of dominoes, which specifically gives me a lot of joy)--but this house drawing is the one that feels most full of life and as if drawn with heart rather than as an act of trying to recreate an image from a book; oh, if only children were left to their own creativity!) All the work of a young Belle York, age 10-11 in 1885-86, from Elmira, NY. Plus two portraits, one of C.E. York (her father I presume) and the other likely her brother, which I would guess were done at a slightly later date.

8 1/2" x 6 7/8". 10 leafs filled front and back + 2 loose drawings; 21 pages of drawings total. Good condition throughout.
