This is one of my favorite carved figure I've found, and I like it more and more the more I look at it. I don't know much at all about it, which I purchased from a dealer with many wonderful and eclectic things, who thought it European, but didn't know much more than that. I would guess the figure represents a saint of some sort, seated and with hands clasped before him, with remnants of paint still covering parts of his body, and layers of color surrounding him to make it seem as if he's enveloped by a throne. The surface to my eye is spectacularly gorgeous, and his carved face, with dramatic nose in profile, and jet black hair still, is just terrific.
5 1/4" t x 2 1/16" w x 1 1/4" d. Structurally very sound, and paint is stable. There is one small hole in the wood, most evident from the backside, and some old glue on the back. I might add a small hook to the back and hang it.
