I'm a sucker for a beautiful knife/utensil tray...I just love them as a form, but also find them super handy--great as catchalls for keys, mail, art of office supplies, really most anything. Plus a handle for easy schlepping from here to there as needed.
This I think is an especially beautiful one, dating to the late 19th/early 20th century, I believe, with a terrific sheen to the dark wood, its edges softened and worn smooth with age and use. (NOTE: the detail shots give the best sense of the color and character of the wood.) The nicely constructed corners are joined by nails--three at each joint--with three nails as well down the center of the short sides meeting the center piece/handle.
This piece is in great antique condition and measures 14 1/2" long x 8 1/2" wide x 4 1/2" tall at highest point (exterior sides measure 2 1/2" tall.)
