Happily, this impressionistic oil on canvas landscape is signed on reverse, and in a readable fashion, so I know it was painted by Emile Stange, with a quick search turning up a fair number of sale records for other paintings by the New Jersey based artist, 1863-1943, who seems to have exhibited actively between the late 1800s and 1930s. He seems to have primarily painted landscapes, much in keeping with this one, which I'd guess dates to the 1920s. I love an atmospheric landscape, and this one has a lovely softness about it, just sky and land and a small farmhouse with pond in the distance, painted I'd guess in early fall. No drama here, but one can very much feel the presence of the artist, 'en plein air', working away to capture the view.
10 5/8 x 8 3/4, oil on unstretched canvas. Good condition, with unpainted spots at corners from where I presume it was pinned to an easel or board during its making.
