A real beauty of an antique retablo painting on tin in all regards,19th century or perhaps a little earlier? Represented is a story from the Book of Tobit, in which the Archangel Raphael accompanies the young Tobias, and his dog, on a journey to Media to collect a debt for his blind father, Tobit. On the way, Raphael has Tobias gut a fish, the gall of which Tobias later rubs on his father's eyes, curing his blindness. Here we have a wonderful (very medieval feeling) rendering of the dog, representing loyalty, and the fish, representing healing, at lower left. And wonderful large golden wings on Raphael. I especially love Tobias in bright red, not as young as sometimes depicted, with his hand in the hand of the angel, a very tender feeling expression of his trust in Raphael's guidance. Great subject, beautifully rendered.
11 1/16" x 7 3/4". Very good antique condition. Great surface, perfectly aged, with a little erosion to bottom right corner, which feels just right, like clouds, or a gust of wind, at Tobias' feet.
